According to Women of China, “In 2018, more than 492,000 international students from 196 countries came to China to study at 1,004 universities and colleges, scientific research institutes, and other educational agencies.”
Education in China has come on in leaps and bounds over the last ten years. Significant investments have been made into China’s higher education system, and with the importance the country places on learning, it is fast becoming one of the top destinations for studying abroad.
Thank to its rising economy, high ranked academic programs, diverse cities and government initiatives, China became an attractive destination for international students.
Last year, the Chinese government sponsored scholarships for around 63,000 international students to study in China, 90 percent of whom chose to pursue a diploma.
China has recently been a major country of origin for international students, but foreign students from over 180 countries are now flocking to China to learn all that this economic powerhouse has to offer.
While in the past, Beijing and Shanghai were the two most popular cities for international students, nowadays the growth of new cities is also a factor that attracts students from all over the globe.
Another reason why China became one the top study abroad destination is the steadily climbing of the world rankings by china’s top university.
At the same time, China is also the number one in sending students abroad to study, due to its massive population and rising middle class who intend to pursue overseas study or jobs abroad.
